Buy a unit that is sized right for your home.
Many people mistakenly believe that bigger is better and buy air conditioning units that are bigger than they require. Air conditioners are measured in tons, which does not refer to the size of the units, but the amount of air that they cool, and people think that bigger units will result in a cooler home and more efficient cooling. However, bigger units result in less efficient operation; they cycle on and off more frequently to cool the same amount of air and they do not remove a sufficient amount of humidity from smaller air space. The result is a home that feels muggier than a home with the right-sized air conditioning unit, and higher utility bills. Of course, a unit that is too small is also a problem; it will have to run constantly to provide cooling and may not be capable of cooling the entire home.
Buy an efficient model.
Many people assume that all new air conditioner models are energy efficient. While it is probably true that any new model you purchase is going to provide energy savings over older models, there remains a huge variation in efficiency in air conditioner models. Higher efficiency does not always mean a higher price tag, though the higher price tag associated with some of the most efficient brands may be well-worth it in projected cost savings over the lifetime of the unit.
